I totally wrote about this before on the tumblr account that I had before this one, but when that one got deleted, I lost that post. However, a few recent events and conversations have led me to re-visit this little annoyance that I have with the phrase “Cool story, bro” and anything else that might be used in its equivalence.
When I am speaking to you about something that I’m passionate about, or I am confiding in you, no matter how big or small, if I am telling you/or venting, I’m telling you for a reason. I am choosing to share my good/sad/happy news with you because a) I consider you a friend or someone close to me & am choosing to share it with you, and b) it’s obviously important to me in some way.
Besides the fact that it makes you seem totally immature, for someone to just utterly dismiss what I have just been ranting about by saying something as ignorant as “Cool story bro,” or anything remotely similar to that particular phrase, is in such bad humour and so distasteful, in my opinion. Maybe I can’t take a joke but here’s how I see it - I am looking for your input, advice, an intellectual rebuttal, or at the very least just a listening, sympathetic ear. By saying something like “Cool story, bro,” I may laugh, but in all sincerity it will definitely make me question the genuineness of the interest you may (or rather, may not) have in me, or in the issues that I care about and are important to me. And it will definitely make me reconsider ever sharing or talking to you about anything again in the future.
